Much like the previous book, I went back and forth between liking and being annoyed by The Temporal Void. All of my complaints about The Dreaming Void are mostly still here. However, there is noticeably more time spent on the "dream" characters. To the point where I was wondering why the author just didn't write that story and forget about all the other characters that are hardly there anyway or, in some cases, aren't very interesting or likable. I'm undecided about whether or not I will be picking up the third book. The three rating is mostly in comparison to the previous book; as the second book in a trilogy and the book immediately following a superb first entry, The Temporal Void has a lot to live up to, and it doesn't quite meet that mark. As the previous book, The Temporal Void is divided into two distinct parts, almost even distinct genres: the fantasy portions in the Void and the sci-fi space opera outside of it. The fantasy stuff is still great; our protagonist comes into his power as a political force in the city, and has to face the question of what sort of actions are acceptable in the defiance of power (although there's also some serious deux ex machina going on). The space opera section, on the other hand, gives the definite impression of spinning its wheels. It's the perennial problem of any middle entry in a trilogy; if you don't go for a big reversal ala The Empire Strikes Back, then you're left filling the blanks and setting everything up for the finale. This portion of the Temporal Void moves events forward so incrementally that it's hard not to feel disappointed. There's important stuff revealed about the nature of the Void and some more links established with the previous series, but it's a bit too little, too late. The trilogy is clearly heading for a compelling, explosive conclusion, but this part does not live up to the sum.
