Novella met typisch Murakami verhaal, over een jongetje dat in de bibliotheek wordt opgesloten door een vreemde oude man die hem drie ingewikkelde oude boeken laat lezen om vervolgens na een maand zijn hersenen te kunnen opslurpen. Hij wordt bewaakt door een schaap man en krijgt te eten van een beeldschoon jong meisje. Zoals normaal bij Murakami flink vaag verhaal maar tegelijkertijd wel boeiend. Het boekje is prachtig opgemaakt, een heel dun. Voor de liefhebbers van Murakami een aanrader While the presentation (the form of the book, the layout, the pictures) is incredible, this slim tale is more slight than the pages belie. In it, a child returns some books to a library, and in seeking more, ends up trapped, before he fights his way out. While the writing is brisk and fun, and there are some interesting, if all-too familiar situations, it all comes out as meaningless, all metaphor evaporating at the surface level, all meaning giving way to a fun little tale. Oh well. Not everything can be a hit.
