About book The Smart One And The Pretty One (2008)
After reading two heavy, depressing books in a row, I decided I needed something light and fluffy. The Smart One and the Pretty One was just the ticket. A predictable story about two sisters ("smart" and "pretty"), this book promises to be nothing more than a pass-the-time book. And that's fine! If you just want to turn your brain off for a few hours, this book is for you. A very good "beach" book. Two sisters, polar opposites. Brought together by a mom going through chemo. Lauren, the younger sister is beautiful ( of course) & a shopaholic. Her older sister Ava (beautiful too) is a conservative lawyer. Lauren is angry when Ava tried to straighten her life out & retaliates by finding an old marriage "contract" at her parents house & setting her sister up to meet the guy.The problem is none if the characters are sympathetic. The sisters are downright mean in the way they talk to each other . Their father is not likeable at all. The mom is the only "real" character, trying to put a brave & happy face on things, but snapping behind closed doors. The men that we are supposed to think are attractive - Russell, the "groom" from the contract & Daniel, who Lauren meets at the hospital, are unlikeable too. Russell tries to make over Ava, is twice divorced & dates bimbos. Daniel is just plain rude, to the hospital staff & other drivers on the road. I agreed with Ava's point of view & felt she would be happier with someone with a similar temperament. Finding a guy she has nothing in common with- & who works in clothes of all things, when she doesn't care at all about such things- is a mismatch, to say the least. She makes an abrupt 180 degree change in her thinking & then says "I'll wear whatever you like"! Surely there must be more eligible guys in the LA area than these 2 losers?
