About book The Secret History Of Wonder Woman (2014)

Jill Lepore explores the roots of Wonder Woman, creating a fascinating biography of her creator and his influences. The book serves double duty as a survey of feminism from the early 1900's through the 1950's (with later topics covered in the epilogue). Lepore's presentation of the life of Marston, Holloway, and Byrne (along with several other significant figures) is balanced and without either apology or judgment. Highly recommended. Lepore illustrates how Wonder Woman emerged from an unorthodox circle of creators steeped in 19th century womens' suffrage, tough nurses advocating birth control and socialism, uncles who were vaudeville female impersonators, the invention of lie-detectors, Hollywood focus group testing, child psychology, S&M, womens' colleges, the iconography of feminism and one man's extremely checkered career in academia.
