About book Book Of Ages: The Life And Opinions Of Jane Franklin (2013)

Jane Franklin not famous...her favorite brother Ben, quite the opposite. Tnis book explores her life through letters to and from her famous sibling. Women during the 1700s were at disadvantage, no political power, poorly educated and generally considered as subordinate. Despite her poor spelling, Jane possesses an amazing wit and intellect. Perhaps,if born male... This book informs on life in the 18th Century and more specifically the life of Benjamin Franklin. Although we do learn much about Jane Franklin Mecom including her personality and strength in enduring the deaths of most of her children and even some of her grandkids, we learn more of the hardships or the times, the history of the American Revolution and of Ben Franklin. Book of Ages is both a biography of Jane Franklin and a meditation on the art of biography and the way we tell history. It is engaging, powerful, emotional, and educational. Despite being scant, information about Jane survives because of her relationship with her brother, Benjamin Franklin. Lepore uses her extensive research skills, passion for her subject, and considerable talent as a writer to provide a window into the life of a remarkable woman, and broadly into the lives of tradesman class women during the 1700s. Highly, highly recommended.
