This is one of the few books that I've read in which the translation does the book justice. Usually, when books are translated, all the wit or puns, or tone is lost, but that's NOT the case in Ring of Fire by Pierdomenico Baccalario. Holy cow, that name is long. Back to the point! The Ring of Fire starts off with an almost impossible coincidence. Four children, from different parts of the world, are drawn together destiny, and end up sharing the same hotel room, and they're all born on February 29. An impossible coincidence. Yet, the events that follow after that, including some city wide blackouts, a creepy violinist who also happens to be a murderer, some ancient texts, an eccentric professor, and the fate of all humanity just need to be set off by any coincidence. As the book says, "It has begun". There's Harvey, the sarcastic American; Sheng, the happy go lucky Chinese; Mistral, the young French dreamer; and Electra, the Italian headstrong leader. The story's written well and the plot had some twists I honestly didn't expect. In short, it's really good! I was wondering why this series sounds similar to the Ulysses Moore series. Gee, maybe because it's the same author? :)This series was fun too although tends towards older kids. The main characters are only about 12-13 but come across more 16. Both this series and the Ulyssess Moore series have been fun. However, being very fast paced and only giving you a little bit of the story per book I am really hoping that I will continue to like them as we find out what the real premise of each series is.
