About book The Request (2014)

This book just didn't quite grab me. I thought the Roman side of the story was great, and his undercover gig - a righteous avenger uniquely interpreted. But Everly to me just didn't quite fit or match up personality wise to the role she played. It's full of action & guarded dialogue which adds to the drama of the story. I think if you alter the story so you tell it from both perspectives, this is a risk that they might not gel. I am a huge fan of Marquita Valentine and her Boys of the South Series is one of my favorites. When I found out about this new series she had coming out, I couldn't wait to read part 1. The Request is part one in a three-part series and is quite different from the other novels I've read by her, but in a delightfully different type of way. While contemporary in nature, it had that suspense/thriller feel to it also. Roman is an assassin for hire, but only assassinates scum bags. He lives his life undercover, keeping his identify secret, constantly having to watch his back. His lifestyle is one he has learned to live with, a loner, never having relationships because of the danger involved to all parties, but Everly Andrews challenges all his beliefs and rules. She has no idea who he really is, and he is determined to keep it that way, determined to keep her safe, while at the same time, he finds himself drawn to her, unable to stay away. A tragic event brings them even closer, but when they begin to get too close, it complicates things even further, forcing Roman to make choices and decisions he never thought he would have to, even if hearts are broken in the process.I really enjoyed part one in this series. It is not a very long book, yet part one felt very satisfying to me, despite its short length, something I have felt lacking in other serial/novella type series. Reading it, I kept thinking Bond, James Bond....though this is nothing like a James Bond story, it just had that kind of feel to me. I guess you could say it is has more of a James Bond with a little bit of Jason Borne type of feel to it, while the story is completely unique in nature. The Request is romantic and suspenseful and Marquita Valentine has introduced me to a totally different side of her writing abilities that I very much enjoyed. I wil be anxiously awaiting the next installment in this series. If you are looking for something fresh and different, then you will want to check this out.
