That's it. If I could give this book anything less than a one-star rating, I would. I've given up on it. I was going to plod through, hoping for a plot to show up, but by page 94 I realised that the book is 300+ pages long - and I truly don't want to torture myself further. 94 pages and nothing has happened. There isn't even any sensible conversation to redeem the novel so far. I have the mental image of pages being dragged through sticky molasses by bone-weary horses. And using the word 'prepped' four times in two pages (by page 64) was never going to increase my liking for this book. Heroine 'preps' the meal (three uses) and thinks about her surgery when she was 'prepped' for the operation. Really?!Ugh. Sarah Mayberry's one of my favorite authors. I love how her books feel slightly exotic (to me, anyway), because Australia is a country I know a lot less about than I really should. Plus, I enjoy how she writes about REAL people with REAL issues. There are no fantasies in a Mayberry.The meet-cute in this book was one of Mayberry's best. Oliver and Mackenzie don't meet under the greatest of circumstances, but that doesn't matter to their dogs, who seemingly fall in love (or maybe heat) with each other. Keeping the dogs apart becomes a real challenge and in the middle of this, Oliver and Mackenzie begin to really see each other.I appreciated Mackenzie's strength and how she'd been through such a rough time with her accident. I worried along with her about Oliver seeing her scars but I needn't have. He's a really sweet guy, but his story doesn't really stand out to me. A good Mayberry, but not a great one.
