About book The Mysterious Benedict Society And The Prisoner's Dilemma (2009)
Reynie, Kate, Sticky, and Constance come to life once more in the third installment of the Mysterious Benedict Society series. Del Roy does a fair job of involving the listener through inflection and the occasional chuckle at the antics of the broad cast of characters, though his ability to voice individuals falls flat. This fast-paced story describes the children's adventures as they attempt to thwart the evil Ledroptha Curtain. Stewart's quirky, intelligent dialogue allows for the characters' personalities to be determined easily from the start, though Roy's interpretation occasionally missteps and distracts from the narrative. His pacing also leaves something to be desired, as drawn-out phrases and lengthy pauses leave the listener impatient. (Audiobook reviewed for AudioFile Magazine, 2010) First off let me say that that this third book hasn't in any way changed my opinion of the ones that came before it. Rather my love for those two books make the disappointment of this one all the harder. I respect the author for his amazing skill and most of all the fact that he gave life to persons I can't ever forget. So in no way am I trying to trash him with this review. Let me explain.Again and again in a sub plot he kept reaching for the term hypnosis. To me what he was describing really didn't seem like hypnosis. (No zombie trance or the like) I feel he might have been trying to find something that his readers had heard of before, so he called it that. But this didn't really make sense to me, even from a plot stand point it seemed to not truly explain matters. Anyway to be on the safe side I tried to skip over those parts, but in doing so you could get a little lost since the main plot started to happen quickly while I was flipping pages. All in all that somewhat ruined the experience for me. But in spite of being a bit lost, the main plot was very good as always. And it really did have some very touching moments in it that really showed how far the characters had come in their relationship with one another. Okay...with that said let me say this. The first two books remain some of my all time favorites, the first was excellent, and the second one was nothing short of brilliant! I honestly can't convey that enough. What hurts me the most is the fact that I partially missed out on spending more time with Kate, Reynie, Sticky and Constance because of having to skip some pages. So in no way am I giving them just 4 stars, since their performance was spot on through all 3 books. So with a knot in my heart over this, I'm gonna pull myself up by the boot straps and fire up my will to write fanfiction based on this series. I approach the project humbly, not with the thought that I'm in any way a better writer, but just the sincere burning desire to be with these awesome individuals again...
