In every romance novel you have characters for a lover a lovee and of course a bad guy/villain. This book was not different. The story of Iain, Laird of the MacKinnon’s a descendant of the powerful sons of MacAlpin was a man laden with guilt and a nightmare that he relives every night. He also is a man that has been lied to all his life, a life of only 2 score, being deceived by his aunt Glenna and other auld ones in his clan. His dreams of a woman’s voice, a lullaby that he just can’t quite get a fix on. Whose voice is in his dreams? Whose tender touch was it that touched him with so much love and affection? It couldn’t be his mother; she passed when he took his first breath. He loves her more than life itself at this moment. Mairi his McLean wife, as she lays upstairs struggles to bring forth their first child into this world, a gift that will soon take its wonderful first breath of life. Ahh, he was so proud of her. Mairi on the other hand hated her husband, she hated his touch, everything about him and more than anything she despised being his wife. That he had laid his hands on her and thus she has to suffer the pain of bearing him a babe. Then comes Page, Northumbria 1124. Someone is watching her; she can hear twigs being broken in the distant forest, although she can see nothing in the bleak darkness of the night. Good lord why did she have to come out tonight, she should have just stayed at the keep. Raised at Aldergh, an English Castle with a beast of a father if you can call him that, he has shunned and ignored her for as long as she can remember. She was always alone, always treated with disdain by her tyrant of a father, when he took the time to even treat her thus. She goes on one of her nightly excursions to take a swim and ends up in a feed sack and is sorely deposited at the feet of the MacKinnon, a filthy Scot her enemy. This book was a little disappointing to me. It drug on to the point I was bored reading it. I liked the characters though so I did finish the read. For ¾ of the book the Scottish group travels up into the Highlands back to their keep, and on and on it went. You can only have so many looks and sighs between the two main characters, good gracious get to the good parts. The story line itself is all right but the author just didn’t seem to listen to her characters. It was like she really didn’t know where to take the story thus it just dragged.Just when I thought I was going to put the book down, there came a funny part of the story which I must admit, did make me laugh but then that was it. When the good part does come that explains what the author is trying to convey there just wasn’t much of it. Boring, come on, I really expected more of this author. I’ve read other books from Crosby which I remember liking but this particular one was sorely lacking in my opinion. I don’t like to give bad reviews on books but I have no choice on this one. I wish there had been moreI really can’t recommend this one but please, read for yourself and form your own opinion. We all have one you know. Another five star read by Crosby. I can't decide which I liked more, this or the last one I read by her. This one gave me many, many laugh out loud moments and is a lot more light hearted and silly whereas the last one was more serious and brooding. Don't let memislead you though, though it was lighthearted and full of humor it remained romantic and entertaining. The plot line is full of good hearted and well meaning characters and aside from a little betrayal(we have to have some of that in there right?) it is for the most part a constant smile inducing story. At times the contast bickering betwixt the two leads seemed churlish and childish but then I would end up laughing anyway and glad of them for it. From this point forward I think I will always be a Crosby fan, she is a fantastic writer. She employs awesome use of setting and dialect and I can tell she spends a lot of time on research...even on light-hearted and laugh coaxing plots such as this.
