About book The Little Old Lady Who Broke All The Rules (2012)

I started this book thinking I was in for a light hearted treat. I was wrong. this book really fell flat. I had to force myself to finish it. Martha, the lead character, is unhappy with the cut backs at her nursing home. She, along with 4 other long time friends decide that they would be treated better in prison than the home, so set out to plan and commit crimes with the hopes of having a better life behind bars. I grew weary of the characters. they weren't funny or complex at all. The English was also tiresome to read. Perhaps because it was translated from Swedish to English, some of the nuances were lost. The constant referral to the group as "The Pensioners" or "The League of Pensioners" was also mundane. The book did, however, point out the lack of empathy people have for the elderly and how they are put in a home and forgotten. It begs the question of who is better off, prisoners or the elderly in long term care? Hard one to review this as I acknowledge it was well written and there were times when I read the book eagerly. But there were also points where I put the book down for 2 weeks and didn't feel the desire to pick it upI think I was frustrated with the naivety of the main characters and wanted to scream at them. You have to love the main characters to love this book. I didn't.The coincidences in the book were also too stretched for me to find the book really enjoyable. Sorry but just not for me
