Having enjoyed The 100-Year-Old Man..., I expected a similar romp. And it many ways it was. I was caught by the prologue and then kept expecting the rest of the book to measure up to its madcap humour. Although it didn't, I still found this a thoroughly enjoyable read. I'm close enough to the age of the characters to empathize with them when they decide life in their care home is less appealing than prison. Their crime spree may stretch the imagination, but it is a good laugh. The humour would work well in a film. Judy Dench as Martha? This is the English translation of a bestselling book in Sweden. Five pensioners residing in the Diamond Retirement Home are dissatisfied with their living conditions and set out to improve their lives by stealing valuable paintings from the National Museum in Stockholm. They escape from the Retirement Home and stay in the Grand Hotel in luxury suites beside the Museum. This is light reading although it does highlight many unfortunate living conditions in retirement homes.
A slow read. Felt long and drawn out. Will not be following this author.
