I was torn on how many stars to give this book. Its probably closer to 3.5 stars. I got it free from Amazon prime. It's a quick fun read but requires an over abundance of suspension of disbelief. I guess it's easy for Trudy (the main character) to do what she does when she has a boat load of money and a man in the wings to help catch her when she falls. Plus maybe it's an Oklahoma thing I don't know many women who shop for clothes at wal mart and Neiman Marcus but maybe that's just me. This is the literary equivalent of a Twinkie, and I mean that in a good way. It's sweet, it's short, it's not necessarily very good for you, but some days it's just what you need. There are no big plot twists or sophisticated literary devices in this one. It's happy fluff wish-fulfillment and proud of it. As a free Kindle Unlimited borrow, why not? It's like just the Towanda The Magnificent parts of Fried Green Tomatoes, with extra sugar. I took one star off because I found the time-warp aspect of it distracting. The main character is supposed to have just turned 40, and I didn't notice any indicators that this book is supposed to have taken place in a previous era, but it feels like it's set in some weird mishmash of the 80s and the 2000s. Nobody seems to have a cell phone, the internet shows up briefly but nobody seems very comfortable with using it, one character refers to "those new flat-screen monitors," they rent movies from a physical store, and the teenaged/early-20s daughter is totally comfortable with identifying the love interest as resembling "Harrison Ford in The Fugitive," a movie that is older than her. Oh yeah, and the main character says that when she was young, magazines had pictures of nice homes, but now they have articles about how to please your man. So... a character in her 40s, who was presumably born in the 70s, remembers what Cosmo was like before Helen Gurley Brown took over? Silly nitpick, probably, but it was the main thing holding this fluffy book down from being pure perfect fluff.
