About book The Julian Chapter: A Wonder Story (2014)

Unexpected ending but quite good. It's very short and, as the author stated at a talk, did not belong in Wonder. However, it's a good read for after that book. I read a Wonder to my 1st grader, but I think this one is too heavy and contains information in the end that he's just not ready for. Maybe when he's order. RJ said she's doing another of these stories and then writing a different book. I look forward to both. I was unsure about reading this ebook. "Wonder" was such a great book for me, that I didn't feel needed to be added to. I already thought it was a little saccharine and wasn't convinced that we needed an extra chapter that humanized the bad guy and made the book even sweeter. In the end,i only read it because my class begged me to.I have to say Ms Palacio did it again. Yes we get explanations of why Julian acted the way he did, yes he is humanized a little more, but the story still managed to surprise me by taking us into Grandmere's life. Stories like hers have been told many times before, (don't want to give too much away), but this touched me, I think because it was unexpected in this story. It led to a few more tears in the classroom (some from the teacher) and to some deep conversations. It is a worthy addition to the book and I think I would always read it to my students after reading Wonder. I would, however, always pause and get them to think about whether we need to read this extra chapter, predict what we might learn about Julian, what effect it might have on how we perceive the book etc.Overall I think the key message of Wonder was "Choose kind". The key messages of the Julian Chapter are that "people can change" and "learn from your mistakes". A great package.
