About book The Hole In Our Holiness: Filling The Gap Between Gospel Passion And The Pursuit Of Godliness (2012)
DeYoung's book is aptly timed to the modern evangelical culture, and its impact was rightly felt for me, as he dispelled many faulty interpretations of texts that I held, along with thoroughly rebutting strands of thought that I've seen among many Christians. I was pretty skeptical of all parts of DeYoung's thesis for the first part of the book, since a lot of it seemed to be ignoring the full impact of the grace of the Gospel, but the second part clarified a lot of those possible concerns with his emphasis. Given that, starting by reading chapters six and seven first before going back to chapter one may lead to a better reading of the book. Overall, though, while at times I felt like he emphasized the necessity of holiness a bit too much, it's definitely a point that needs to be thought about more in today's environment, and so it was likely heeded. Many of the things that DeYoung talked about struck home with me, convicted me, and led me on to a greater love of God and the path of holiness that I can actually pursue through His strength. Definitely recommended.4.5 Stars. (Excellent) The Hole in Our Holiness is a good contribution in the ongoing discussion regarding sanctification. Those looking for the balance/tension between God's grace and man's effort will be especially pleased. If nothing else, DeYoung cites numerous texts that prove to be problems for those who adhere to Keswick theology, perfectionism, and/or the idea that growth stems effortlessly from just thinking about the gospel. Overall, I continue to be impressed with the author's balance.CB
