About book Taking God At His Word: Why The Bible Is Knowable, Necessary, And Enough, And What That Means For You And Me (2014)
Kevin DeYoung does a fabulous job of clearly articulating why the Bible should be taken seriously and why holding a high view of Scripture is important. He starts in Psalms 119 showing us the Psalmist's view and then clearly walks the reader through the different attributes of scripture, finishing with Chris's view of Scripture and a very good conclusion. This book is certainly aimed more towards believers who want to fall in love with God's Word, but could certainly be useful to seekers trying to understand the Christian's view of Scripture (mainly the latter chapters). I imagine Kevin DeYoung to be the kind of guy who, when deciding to cut loose and go crazy, adds a fourth marshmallow to his hot chocolate. I say this affectionately, because I truly do think very highly of DeYoung. And this book only reaffirms this thought."Taking God at His Word" is a brief, yet thorough study of what the Bible says about the Bible. This is less a book about the historical accuracy of the most important book ever written, and more about what scripture, and Jesus, says about scripture. Among many other things, we learn that God's word is four vital things: enough, clear, final, and necessary.DeYoung's writing somehow balances that of a learned reformed theologian and someone who has spent many years preaching to new and young Christians. He tosses in words you'd only see in Master's level courses, but takes the time to explain what it means and its relevance to the text.Perhaps nothing terribly ground-breaking, but certainly a great book for Christians to impact our thinking on the importance of scripture as the foundation of our faith. I've only recently started reading DeYoung's writing at The Gospel Coalition, and this is the first book of his I've read. I look forward to continuing reading more from DeYoung for the foreseeable future.
