Comportamentos desajustados (ou até mesmo doentes) e mentes patológicas são elementos que me atraem sempre numa leitura; gosto das tentativas de os fundamentar e, por vezes, justificar. Ao centrar este livro numa comunidade relativamente excêntrica que vive isolada do resto do mundo e de acordo com as suas próprias regras sociais, Ken Follett acertou em cheio na minha curiosidade.A revindicação destas pessoas ao governo é até bastante compreensível: pretendem impedir a construção de uma barragem que os obrigará a abandonar o terreno em que se fixaram. Contudo, o que começa com uma simples - e pouco credível - ameaça anónima depressa evolui para graves actividades criminosas.Em 'Os Filhos do Éden' não andamos à procura dos culpados, sabemos quem eles são desde o início e esta total disponibilidade de informação acaba por funcionar muito bem no livro. Acompanhamos simultaneamente a investigação do FBI pelo ponto de vista de Judy que, por ter a sua competência constantemente questionada e bloqueada por terceiros, acaba por ver os criminosos escapar por um triz uma e outra vez, com consequências catastróficas - este jogo do gato e do rato mantêm-nos interessados no desfecho e saudavelmente enervados com os desenvolvimentosAchei muito interessante a análise de ameaças através da voz e da caligrafia. O autor conseguiu pôr-me a torcer por Judy, para que triunfasse num caso que lhe foi entregue injustamente e como modo de insulto. Gostei especialmente de ler sobre a comunidade - como funcionava, como os membros interagiam uns com os outros de acordo com uma hierarquia e como eram manipulados sem que de tal se apercebessem a ponto de olharem para o mundo exterior como degenerado, corrompido, hipócrita e ganancioso ao mesmo tempo que seguiam cegamente um homem que exibia estes mesmos defeitosEste é um livro cheio de acção e movimento. Há sempre qualquer coisa a acontecer e o autor não perde tempo a avançar história adentro. Depois de ter ficado relativamente desiludida com 'O Escândalo Modigliani', fico muito contente com a minha teimosia em ler mais um livro de Ken Follett...e, certamente, não o último!
“The Hammer of Eden,” by Ken Follett (Random House, 1998; audiobook read by Alexander Adams). Follett really knows how to write thrillers, and not cheap either. But everyone knew that except me. A commune hidden away in a California river valley, stable and prosperous after 25 years, a successful vineyard, is threatened by plans to guild a hydroelectric plant that will drown the valley. The commune is led by a most unlikely pair: a sexy, small-time singer and a violent thug who accidentally stumbled upon the place, which turned him around. But what to do about the threat, which gives Rickey nightmares? A new communard, gorgeous, with a young son, happens to be a seismologist whose husband tracks earthquake faults and knows how to trigger them. So Rickey finds an oil-exploration team with a “seismic vibrator,” a machine that triggers small vibrations in the earth to seek oil deposits. He murders one of the workers, steals the truck and gets it to California. Calling themselves “The Hammer of Eden,” they threaten to set off earthquakes unless all power-plant construction in the state is stopped. Vietnamese-American FBI agent Judy Maddox, who is being driven out by office politics, gets the assignment to track these guys down. The Hammer actually can trigger earthquakes. And they’re off. One can easily see the way the plot is built. It moves from improbability to improbability, Rickey gets out of one jam after another, Maddox always one step behind, fighting her bosses as well as the terrorists, right down to the last “heartstopping confrontation.” But Follett makes the characters interesting, gives depth and sympathy to the commune---they really had built something beautiful down in the valley, though there are signs of cracking. Do You like book The Hammer Of Eden (1999)?
Ao contrário de alguns romances passados na época da II Guerra Mundial de Ken Follett, este livro não deslumbra - talvez pelo argumento mais rebuscado, talvez pelo desfasamento da edição portuguesa face à edição original. Afinal, dezasseis anos tornam obsoletas muitas tecnologias que, no livro, pretendem dar uma tónica de vanguardismo ao longo da história.No entanto, Ken Follett prova, aqui, que é realmente um mestre do suspense. Mesmo num livro que não é a sua melhor história, o enredo prende facilmente qualquer leitor. Para pontuações superiores a três estrelas, teremos sempre o "Nome de código: Leoparda" e o inesquecível "Os Pilares da Terra".

Priest hat sich vor Jahren zum unangefochtenen Herrscher einer Hippiegemeinschaft aufgeschwungen. Diese Gemeinschaft lebt in Kalifornien und baut von den meisten Menschen unbeachtet Wein an. Nun aber soll der Pachtvertrag für das Land auf dem sie leben gekündigt werden, weil durch einen Kraftwerksbau die Sicherheit dieses Landes nicht mehr gewährleistet werden kann. Das ist dieser Gruppe überhaupt nicht Recht und so nutzen sie die Fähigkeiten die sie haben und versuchen die kalifornische Regierung zu erpressen. Dazu entwenden sie einen so genannten seismischen Vibrator und Daten von einem der führenden Seismologen Kaliforniens, denn Melanie - die ebenfalls zu dieser Gruppe gehört - weiß wie man mit diesen Informationen Erdbeben verursachen kann. In Kalifornien als tektonisch hochaktives Gebiet, bedarf es keiner großen Energien um die Platten wieder in Bewegung zu versetzen. Es entspinnt sich ein Wettlauf zwischen FBI und der Gruppe die sich "Die Kinder von Eden" nennen.Die Figuren sind sehr gut gezeichnet, wie man es von Follett eigentlich gewohnt ist. Sprachlich bekommt man die hohe Qualität geboten, die man bei diesem Autor schon voraussetzt ehe man die erste Zeile gelesen hat. Stilistisch ist Follett natürlich ebenfalls ein Meister seines Faches, weshalb der Roman wirklich als gut gelungen bezeichnet werden kann.

I like Ken Follett's writings, but this one was quite different than what I'm used to. The author delves into the lives of an off-the-grid group that have a limited time to vacate their 'dwellings' in a remote valley. After many years of isolated living, a few of the inhabitants decide to try some extreme threats to make government leave them alone - all without exposing their exact location. Made me think that in today's world, this whole scenario might actually be considered by someone - somewhere.
