About book The Falconer (2014)

Not really sure how I feel about this book. The fact that I didn't read it quickly is usually a bad sign but it wasn't that I didn't like it, something was just off. I really liked all the characters and the story line. I love the time period and the take on faeries being evil beings. I think it's the steampunk that threw me off. I've never really read anything like that and for me it just doesn't really fit the time period(which is my favorite) so I think it made me feel disjointed about the whole thing. But if you like steampunk then this shouldn't be a problem and otherwise this is a lovely book. This book is a heart-pounding, action packed debut novel. It is fast-paced, full of suspense, action, intriguing Scottish mythological creatures, riveting world building, a huge dose of steampunk everything, and a great cast of realistic characters.Aileana Kameron (known as Kam)is an eighteen year old girl who witnessed her mother being murdered by a sithichean, a baobhan sith - a feary. From that fateful night, Kam now slays the fae before they kill people. The main reason that drives her into killing fae is revenge - to destroy the faery who killed her mother. She has been trained and mentored by Kiaran, a faery, to learn how to kill each type of sithichean. To help aid Kam in her killings, she invents ingenious weapons and tools such as lightning pistols, a sonic cannon, an ornithopter, and much more. But what she does not know is that she is a Falconer. Kam is part of the last line of female warriors that were born with the gift for hunting and killing the fae. She is the last surviving Falconer alive. Only she can prevent the massacre of humanity from the fae who are thirsty for human life and destruction.Kam is a strong, smart, sassy, feisty, stubborn heroine who grows on you throughout the book. She is a well rounded character who was very realistic. Many people can relate to her. What I also liked about her is how she is comfortable in her own skin, that she can stand and fight for herself, and how she doesn't care what society sees her as. She'd rather go against what society dictates and just be herself. Kiaran is a strong, stubborn, and smart fae that you grow to really like as the book goes on. At first, he is cold, calculating, harsh, and unemotional. But as secrets and old scars come out into the open, he grows on you. Derrick is a hilarious pixie who loves honey but most of all he is very loyal. He is the comedic character in this book who lives is Kam's closet sewing and mending clothing. These three are great characters that add so much depth to this book because each one is realistic (even though two of them are fae). Overall, this is a very enjoyable debut novel. I loved every minute of it and could not get enough of it. Now I just have to wait for almost a year to read the next installment!
