To be honest, when I started reading the book, I wanted to put it down immediately, because it seemed that the author had read some bad urban fantasy and was trying to emulate it. However, if you get past the first 100 pages, it's not actually a bad book. The beginning seemed to drag on, like Williams tried to hit every stereotypical trope Urban Fantasy had ever produced. After that, he seemed to actually concentrate on getting a story going, and that's where the book became interesting. It moved from bad urban fantasy to what I love most about Tad Williams -- solid world-building and imaginative character development, with hints at a deeper conspiracy under it all. Overall, I quite enjoyed it in the end and will even read the next one in the series. This was definitely one of those page turners. It's fast paced and quickly moves from one story plot to another without too much nonsensical or mundane delays. Loved how it wasn't another typical angels vs demons spin, but rather had a original take on the primordial battle of heavenly and hellish hosts.Stories that don't have a generic good/bad characters are a definite plus one in my books, they have a reason behind why they do things (well mostly), as to whether they truly are evil or not, are all up to the opinions of the reader. The characters are mostly well developed, although i knocked a star off because honestly, there were too many plot holes left unattended to at the end of the book. (paving way to a sequel)Some things are just too unrealistic, i mean a giant demon chasing a guy around the city, doesn't raise a bystander's attention? The author sweeps the problem aside by saying its one of those "heaven's" magics that normal humans wont notice them. But i mean come on.... The demon utterly destroys people, slams into fences and blows a hole in a building, guns firing everywhere, hundreds of bullet shells on the ground, people firing indiscriminately and humans think it was caused by a car accident?Overall, good book. Enjoyed it
