This book had me going up and down... not really in a good way. It was slow to start then would pick up some, then slow again. It started getting interesting about chapter 16. I felt both characters were really juvenile the beginning. Both characters were very stubborn about admitting anything. Once they finally gave in and starting trusting each other was when the book started getting interesting. I'm not sure if I will read the second book or not. An engaging and well-written New Adult read, though a little heavy on sex side for me (haha! That's what I get for wandering out of YA--however, since it's expected in NA, I'm definitely not reducing the star rating for that--just wanted to let reader-friends know what to expect!). I did feel that, given the "apocalypse begins in one week" premise, the characters' actions needed to reflect more urgency. I mean, I wouldn't have been able to sit still by day five if I really believed all hell was going to break loose unless I got something done by the end of the week. I sure wouldn't have left the necessary ceremony until the very last few hours by choice--even if someone else was arguing for it. Or gone surfing in the meantime. :P Yes, it was a nice break from the action, and it did bring forward some relationship development, but the lack of urgency really struck me. Still, a fun story with some good twists, great inclusion of a less-common pantheon of gods (Yay Native American traditions!) and a recommended read for anyone who enjoys New Adult stories.Disclosure: I received a copy of The Curse Keepers via a giveaway run by the author. This in no way influenced my review.
