This book has been in my recommendations from Goodreads for a really, REALLY long time. I'm so glad I finally read it! I haven't read the Revelations, but I didn't need to at all to read this book. It was fantastic anyway. It was fast-paced, action filled, and the dynamics between Hadrian and Royce were incredible. They hated each other so much that it made so intrigued to find out how these two very different men would form a strong friendship. I can't wait to learn more about Gwen! So I read this book during one of my moments of insomnia. I know that the Riyria Revelations series was actually released first, but I like to read a series in order. Plus, it's always a treat to get a backstory if one is available. Sometimes I felt like Hedrian was too trusting, and sometimes I felt like Royce was too non empathetic. But hey, apparently this was one of the reasons Arcadius was so adamant about linking this pair of opposites. I chose the Audible version of this story, and Tim Gerard Reynolds made this story come to life. I'm looking forward to seeing what else is in store for this series and the next.
