Amazing and inspiring...Miller is a voracious reader who carefully examines the habits of lifelong readers and cultivates them in her classroom. Miller's minimalist approach to reading instruction embodies the precept "Let them read!". So many schools and educators are getting this wrong, but Miller has it just right - create a book flood and let the students swim in it! This book is a great companion to Kelly Gallagher's Readicide. Someone recommended this to me at the beginning of the school year and I finished it today. What a wonderful validation of reading! What a great model Donalyn Miller is for any reader. She stresses how important choice is for kids-and allowing them time in school to read. Every. Day. Just read. Whatever you want! I would have loved to have her as a teacher. I like the fact she encouraged her students to set a goal of reading 40 books-across all genres! Lots of good ideas in her book. I am going to check out her other one next!
Miller gives voice to what every librarian knows but needs to hear in the wasteland of bubbles.
