About book Reading In The Wild: The Book Whisperer's Keys To Cultivating Lifelong Reading Habits (2013)
I really liked "The Book Whisper", but feel pretty neutral about this book. I appreciate how Miller shows her thinking changing as she grows as an educator. However, I did not have any "ah ha" moments while reading this book. Her ideas and strategies are good, but not really novel or different from other giants in the LA education field. Parts of this book felt like a summary of Atwell's works. It is a good resource for someone who has not read widely in this area, but ancillary for someone who has. Donalyn Miller outlines her strategies for her reading classroom. She's both optimistic and realistic, offering other reading teachers the tools to help their students be successful in reading more, and therefore becoming lifelong readers.I read this over the summer, and immediately had ready-to-use ideas for use in my struggling readers class. I've borrowed and adapted many of the recording templates that are included, and I am using the Booksource Classroom Organizer to manage my classroom library. With over 800 books in my library, this tool has been invaluable, and Reading in the Wild was worth the read just for that.I highly recommend this for language arts teachers who want to promote a reading curriculum that encourages lifelong reading.
