I'm impressed with this first in series. Refreshing to read about an urban fantasy heroine who is in her 30's, has a kid and is divorced. Yes she can still kick ass. Also, would you believe that she actually drinks water and doesn't live on a diet of coffee? I'm flabbergasted. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. I love Kelly Gay's world building and Charlie Madigan is a heroine that just might be my next favourite character in the genre. I liked Kelly Gay's universe. Unlike a lot of UF this actually has some family complications and an imperfect heroine who while kick-ass is often wrongheaded, stubborn and flat out wrong. She's grumpy, temperamental and has some delusions about how people view her. Which is nice, since it's far more realistic than most UF.That's not to say this novel (and its sequels) do not suffer somewhat by overused tropes like the super-pretty people. I wonder if there's some sort of golden rule that an UF plot requires a lot of pretty people. If it hadn't been for a huge abundance of hot men, this would have got four stars.
Do You like book The Better Part Of Darkness (2009)?
A thrilling continuation of Kelly Gay's Charlie Madigan series. One book and series I need more of.

I hated this book. It dragged on way too long and I have no desire to read another from the series.
