A lot I like about this story: colorful characters, historic elements, human drama. It's overwrought, fantastic in some of its passages, but that could be excused by its being the tale of a man looking back over his life. I learned some things I'd rather not have known, but suppose the hard truths of human cruelty are not to be shied away from, even in fiction. And the tale of Nero makes the cruelty of the evil characters in this book look, perhaps, not so far-fetched after all. I really loved this book and that surprised me - not really a story that would intrigue me on the face of it. This book really had a sense of place and I was taken in by the world that Mr. Harvell created. Wonderful characters. Although I pretty much knew what was going to happen with the love story part (kind of predictable) I still devoured the tale. Maybe a few plot holes here and there, but nothing to quibble over. And, I'm a certified quibbler.
