I found John Maxwell's insight into leadership fascinating. He breaks down the levels of leadership into five levels. Until you master one level you cannot move to the next. I once thought being a leader was about getting people to obey you as a manager. Oh, so not true. Positional leadership is only level one. There is so much more to leading a team. You need to read this book if you want to be an effective leader. As CEO or Deputy CEO in libraries for 35 years I was not impressed.I believe leadership involves1.A sense of strategic direction (you must know where you are going)2.Intuition/gut feeling/instinct Scientific management takes you only so far)3.Financial acumen (you must be able to understand your financial position)4.Make your staff feel they are key players in an important organization.5.Make staff valued as important individuals in their own right.Maxwell runs a very successful organization but this book is not for me' He focusses wholly on the people but ignores the organization they are working in
Very practical guide to becoming a better leader. Excited to put into practice all that he shared.
