About book Ten Little Fingers And Ten Little Toes (2008)

Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes by Mem Fox is a good book to read in Pre-k or Kindergarten. This book find a simple way to uncover the theme of diversity. Through out the book, it show different babies from around the world and how they all have ten toes. This would be good to help students understand that we all are similar but we all have traits that make us unique. This book was easier to read because it was rhyming and had repetition. In the classroom I would use this this book to teach them about their toes and how they all have ten. I could expand this book and have the students find other similarities they have with one another. Not only can I have the students pick out the similarities with one another, I could also have them identify differences. This would allow every student to notice that everyone is unique. This would be a very interactive book for children. This book tells the story of children born all over the world. It highlights their differences, but the focus of the book is the commonality that all of these children have ten little fingers and ten little toes. The book is narrated by the mom of one of these children and ends with her talking about her own child. This book is simply written and targets a very young audience. The words are accompanied by striking images that add to the words. While the words make no mention of cultural diversity, the images are what bring power to the words. Each image brings to light a different culture, showing children from all over the world, children coming from very different backgrounds and practices. This book is a heartwarming reminder that even though each and every person has a different story, we are all human and as humans we all have innate commonalities. The simple patterns and rhyming shown throughout the book, make this a great book for beginning readers. It is easy to follow and teaches a great lesson.Reading level: preschoolFox, M., & Oxenbury, H. (2008). Ten little fingers and ten little toes. Orlando, FL.: Harcourt.
