About book Sub-Human (2012)

This is a fun read. While not the first book in the order the author wrote them, it's the first book in the sequence of events in the series. I'm glad I got it knowing that, while I don't mind later flashback books, I really like an interconnected series of books to go in order. The world of the future is pretty bleak. War, power mad politicians, corruption - wait, is this the future or this week?...but I kid.But seriously it's a very dark world that begins this tale. Our hero is somewhat naive about the universe at the outset but there are lessons aplenty for him.The technology truly creates the issues in this book. There is a faction that believes in ultimate high tech and strong Artificial Intelligence (strong meaning that it's capable of having true independent emotion and thought) while the other verges on being anti-technology - except of course where it furthers their ends and increases their iron-fisted control over the populace. The author makes the people real, the technology familiar yet fantastic and the problems a clear progression from where the world is now; in other words, this book is the sort that grabs you and lets you immerse yourself easily. The first of the Post-Human Books, and probably the least successful. The plot line is more than a little forced, and there is not enough real drama. The author's prose style is very basic, and occassionally a little clumsy. You won't be quoting any lines from this one.I believe that the biggest problem with this one is that it had to fit into what the author had already written. The science is okay, and it hangs together well enough, but it didn't really grab me. The villains are a little to obvious. Now, by that I do not mean that they are spotted too easily, though they are that. I mean that the villains are a bit too obvious in their villany. The villain characters are barely believable and they are just a bit obvious.Actually, I feel like the author should have skipped this book all together. It is not needed and the rest of the series might have seemed better if I had not read this one first.
