The story line for this book had the potential for an amazing book but unfortunately for me the heroin killed the book and it gets 3 stars because Rhys was freaking amazing. This book is about Rhys who is a warrior who is captured by the Romans and made into a gladiator. He manages to escape and he accidentally hides in the land of the fae but without noting to pay them for trespassing he is turn into a black mastiff, a grim, announcer of death. After 2000 plus years of servitude he meets Morgan who frees him without knowing and then all goes to hell. The minute you meet Rhys and get into his head you can't help but fall in love with him, he's vowed to protect Morgan and falls in love with her and all he asks in return is her trust but can she do that, of course not.He tells her his story and of course she doesn't believe him at first but then as the story goes on all the signs say he's telling the truth, her friends believe him, everybody believes him except for her and it gets tiring real fast. The fact she doesn't "decide" to believe him till the last chapter pretty much just pissed me off.Rhys is great, he fixes her whole farm, he helps her take care of a wounded horse, he does little things for her and is always honest with her and all she freaking does is whine about everything. The entire book we are granted front row seats to the same inner debate of "I want him but he is crazy" or "It makes sense but there is no way he is telling the truth." It was fine at first, I expected this reaction as part of the book but about half way through I was done with her and started skipping some of her parts and mainly reading those in Rhys point of view.I honestly wouldn't recommend this book and probably won't read any more in the series if I can expect heroines like Morgan OMG... An ancient brave celtic warrior, horribly tortured for centuries, finds true love and freedom! Add in Celtic folklore, Renaissance fairs, dogs, horses, a feisty veterinarian, the Fae and romance! Combine quirky characters, both magical and not, great twists, funny dialogue, and PASSION and I'm totally hooked! I love my Highlanders and Rhys ROCKS! He is one hot dude! His brogue melted my heart. Dr. Morgan Edwards is our heroine and I wanted to shake her through much of the book because she didn't just fall at Rhys feet. But I can't stay frustrated with a veterinarian who is totally devoted to her animals. No spoilers, but the ending is fabulous. There's no cliff-hanger either (Thank you, Dani! I hate cliff-hangers!) Bottomline: I was enamored, engulfed and enthralled! With this book, Dani has become a must-read author for me.5 stars!
