Ellen Airgood captured the heart of living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan through her characters and the lives they led. I enjoyed this predictable novel and was anxious to read to the end to verify my predictions. Living in Michigan myself, I have friends whose lives originated in the UP and they exhibit the sturdiness that it takes to survive in that environment. While reading Madeline's story, I was constantly relating back to my friends' lives and the lives of their families that either took them to the UP or removed them from the UP. South of Superior brought these lives to life and gave meaning to the why of their existence. I liked this book. I like reading books about the area where I am visiting - I am now in Michigan and this is about the UP which is a place, even though I grew up here, where I have never spent any time. It has always been a separate country from the lower part of the state. The main character was a woman from Chicago who goes back to search for her roots. It's engaging, realistic, unsentimental, adventurous and accurately captures the feel of the geography and the culture. It has made me want to take a trip up there to check out Grand Marais, the town the author lives in and bases the book upon.

There wasn't anything wrong with this book... Just wasn't anything special. A totally "eh" book.
