About book Prairie Evers (2012)

Highpoints of the story: Moves to New York from North Carolina with Dad, Mom, and Grandma Was homeschooled and then put in public school Makes friends with Ivy Blake Ivy's Mom has new boyfriend, George Her Mom hits herPrairie Evers is a book about a young lady names Prarie and her family. Prairie's family - Mom, Dad, and Grammy - lived in New York. Grammy homeschooled Prairie all of her life. Then one night while they were playing Monopoly, Grammy told Prairie that she was moving back to North Carolina becaused she missed North Carolina. After Grammy moved, Prairie had to go to public school for the first time in her life. At first it was not fun at all. Then she met a girl named Ivy. They became best friends. Prairie decided she would like to try to raise chickens. So she went to the library to read up on how to take care of them.Ivy and Prairie both learned a lot about life while raising chickens. This was a cute book and I would suggest ages 8 to 12 read this book. (Student review by Maddie)DISCLOSURE: The author provided a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for our review. No compensation was received for this review. "'This was my room, you know," she [mother] said after a while. 'I always liked that window that looks east'"(8). "I sighed, but I liked knowing Mama and I felt the same about that window. The first thing I did every day back at home was look outside. I'd check on the weather and see the tangle of honeysuckle scrambling up the barn wall, the dark, quiet clump of rhododendron standing by the well house, the slender branches of the redbud tree etched against the mountainside. Here the view was different--there was a big hemlock tree giving the sky a sharp poke, an old chicken coop whose boards were as gray as a rainy day, a barn and some sheds and a meadow rolling slowly down the hill toward town--but it gave me the same good feeling to survey the world from up on high first thing"(80). The writing in this book is beautiful. With every sentence and paragraph, a reader can picture the scenes as if a delicate movie was being shown privately. This book, Prairie Evers by Ellen Airgood tells a rather regular story or a young girl, Prairie, who moves with her parents to the farm in New Paltz, New York which her mother inherited to begin a life of "living off the land." Grammy moved with them too and she homeschools Prairie. But when Grammy decides she misses North Carolina and is moving back home, Prairie's life changes. Her parents enroll her in public school where she is the oddball in everything from her name to her chicken project, until she meets another oddball, Ivy. Ivy has problems completely different from Prairie's. Slowly, Ivy becomes not only a friend but a part of Prairie's family. Both girls learn to be themselves and embrace their differences. This fairly regular story becomes anything but regular with the beautiful similes and metaphors that Airgood uses like bait on a hook to reel readers into the story.
