About book Small Bunnys Blue Blanket (2000)

Small Bunny and Blue Blanket are inseparable, doing everything together... even playing in the sandbox. When Mommy insists that Small Bunny and Blue Blanket both need a bath, Small Bunny doesn't agree. Blue Blanket is perfect and Small Bunny doesn't like change one little bit. Mommy thinks Blue Blanket is good as new; Small Bunny is skeptical. But, after a day of swinging, painting, reading, and playing, Blue Blanket is just as he used to be... Perfect. Minimal text and simple illustrations with splashes of blue fill this quietly amusing story about change, friendship, and love. Eh... kind of cute story and illustrations but it didn't really grab me. Mainly pencil drawings w/ a little blue for the blanket, kind of typical story about a child and his blankie (and how it's better dirty rather than washed). What happens when the best friend that you do everything with suddenly looks and feels (and smells?) different? In this story, Small Bunny whose best friend, Blue Blanket assists him in many endeavors, from reading to painting to sand castle building. But when Small Bunny’s mother washes Blue Blanket, things just are not the same… or are they? Read the book to find out if Small Bunny learns to love and accept his old friend in his altered state. The simple pencil drawings, accented with very minimal, muted pink and blue, recall a child’s drawings, and emphasize the mindset of the main character and his dislike of change. Blue Blanket, drawn in varying shades of muted blue and in varying shapes and sizes depending on its activity, seems almost to come alive on some pages. No doubt Small Bunny (and his real life, preschool-aged counterparts), often feel that Blue Blanket is alive, which the author captures perfectly.
