About book Shiver Trilogy Boxset (2011)

If you are a twilight fan you will probably like these books. Though i find the wolves to be much more realistic if people could actually turn into wolves. It seems to make a lot more sense then most werewolves, which is why i like this so much. The books are like poems, they are so beautifully written. Also something i love is that each book is printed in a different color, and the cover art is magnificent, these look so good on my bookshelf! Raven Boys was so delightful that going back in time to Wolves of Mercy Falls was maybe always going to be a disappointment. Don't get me wrong -- this is still skillful stuff. Maggie can always spin a line and, for example, "I may have thrown one too many Molotov cocktails over God's fence," is a stonking good one. And her treatment of lycanthropy as simultaneously a disease and a metaphor for death is an interesting one. Most of my problems with the book might be rooted in my lack of interest in the dense romantic elements, but here we go. First, yes, I am personally bored to tears with long sequences of meet cutes, makeouts, wistful longings, etc, etc, and it's not you, it's me. Second probably ties into it. Grace and Sam are not super interesting to me. It's probably telling that once we throw the more toxic and more, uh, /active/ figures of Cole and Isabel in the mix, I have a lot more fun with the books. It's not that I only like dysfunctional people, I swear, I liked Blue just fine, but there's so little grist to our heroes otherwise. Sam a little more so than Grace. Mostly because eeeveryone likes Grace and it's so boooring. Sam might be your carbon copy of the artsy ~sensitive~ type, but he has a few pros. Namely that both Cole and the narration make fun of him (I loved the beat of him deciding whether to confront Cole or not based on how his solitaire game turned out), and that he's targeted for some generalized hatred and mistrust. And his relationship with Beck is complex and sad. Grace's parents just suck and there's only so much you can do with that. Oh, Isabel is a bit stock, as is Cole, but Cole especially gets most of the good lines, so what will you do. Anyway. Yes, everyone is sexy and tragic and there's a lot of nonsense about tragic sexiness, but there's still some good material in here. Also a Tolkeinish amount of poetry if you're into that sort of thing. (Most of it written by other people, not that Maggie's is terrible when it gets tossed in.) There's just not that dark, cool, compelling drive as in Raven Boys. There's a lot of nice scenes against pretty landscapes and a lot of emotional mooning about and I wanted a bit more. But not my typical genre!
