I first stumbled onto Melinda Leigh after reading a review of her first book in the She Can series. I wasn't disappointed. Leigh jumps into the action like she's been challenged to a fight in school and she takes the first punch. From there she continues to pummel the bigger meaner adversary. Or at least that's my impression. In "She Can Scream," Leigh's heroine, Brooke Davenport, is a bad ass. Teacher by day and self defense instructor by evening. She's bound and determined to keep tragedy from striking any young women around her. Brooke is damaged. In her past, her best friend was killed. Leigh likes this formula. She's mastered the troubled/harried/chased woman faces death, finds a decent guy who doesn't like psycho killers and kicks some serious butt despite almost certain doom. Brooke interrupts a serial killer, saves his victim and ends up getting chased by the serial killer. She meets this guy. He's a catch. She doesn't entirely care. She's got other things on her mind. But, hey, he's seen his share of trouble. He can relate. She likes him. A lot. Leigh's dialed in on the romance thriller. She's also really good at plot twists and creating a really creepy bad guy. The evil worms into your head so much that by the finale, he has got to go. Very Enjoyable...I read Melinda Leigh's 1st book in this series, She Can Run, and thought it was pretty good. Somehow I missed the 2nd book but I don't think it truly mattered because this book can certainly stand-alone. Although there was a brief encounter with the main character from the first book, the story itself didn't factor into this book at all.The storyline in this book was really good. There was a lot of suspense and excitement from start to finish. I enjoyed the characters in this book quite a bit and it was fun to see the romance build between the main characters. I wasn't very sure how I felt about Luke at first because he comes off as a bit of a sissy at the beginning. He just wasn't the macho hero that a lot of readers enjoy. After a while he grew on me but I'm not sure everyone will feel the same.Overall I really enjoyed this book and whether or not you are following this series I would recommend this book. This isn't a series where you have to read every book in order to keep up.
