Meh. Most of the characters spent most of the book so miserable that it wasn't exactly fun to read. Anna, for all that her situation was difficult, and I felt for her, was pretty insufferable at times, unable to understand that some people might not like to read as much as she did. Michelle was hilariously judgmental and rushing to conclusions about Rory for the better part of the book, while at the same time bristling because people were judgmental and rushing to conclusions about her. And the book was VERY English. Which is certainly not a bad thing, but I had never heard of many of the books described, and lots of everyday lingo went over my stupid American head. A readable story, but I really didn't come away with a good feeling when it was over. I am enjoying this Author's books... She brings us the atmosphere/environment of a small village whose population is not insensitive about pets, especially dogs, and in this specific book, the story of the Bookshop that changed several people's lives. There is Anna, always giving her best to be wife and mother to her Husband's three girls (! not easy!)and Michelle, scared by a past she does not want to remember. I am not going to go into any "spoilers", suffice to say that this story is evocative of friendship, solidarity and of the beauty and inspiration of books and stories... I loved it.Maria Carmo,Lisbon, 19th. November 2013.

Sweet escapism with dogs, children's books and a hint of romance - what more could you want!?!

Three and a half stars. Very good. Written in two points of view.
