About book Secret Girlfriend (RVHS Secrets) (2013)
I thought this story had a lot of potential and started out well. I think the biggest issue I had was that the characters were pretty underdeveloped. It starts right off showing Chris blowing Amy off constantly - we never see anything that shows us why Amy liked him in the first place, which makes her devotion to him pretty hard to relate to. I was even questioning if the two had ever kissed or anything like that until they did later in the book. Then Luke comes in, and seems inexplicably attracted to Amy even though she is a jerk to him in just about every interaction they have for the first half of the book. Why does he keep bothering? I just don't know what he sees in her. I don't read a lot of young adult simply because I think it's hard for an adult to really be accurate in how it feels to be a teenager again. Looking back, we always see more clearly than we did while in the middle of it. So, a lot of YA can come across as a dramatic exaggeration of a teenagers maturity or even immaturity. It's a fine line to walk and Bria has nailed it.The characters were beautifully portrayed. The strained relationship that Amy had with her father had my heart breaking during every mention of it. Amy's complicated thought process with Luke and Chris was completely relatable. I had forgotten the social complexities of high school until I was suddenly thrust back into it through Amy's eyes. The story was fantastic, the writing superb. Bria is one of my faves. Definitely in the top five. I will forever read anything she writes.
