In the novel I Am Nujood by Nujood Ali, a ten year old girl finds herself forced into marriage at a young age. While she was in this forced relationship she was physically and sexually abused by her cruel husband. One day Nujood worked up the courage to run away from her husband and seek the help of the court. Nujood Ali is a strong, courageous, and brave girl. While Nujood could have kept quiet like the typical girl married at a young age, she was courageous enough to escape. To run away from someone so overpowering and harsh would be so terrifying and hard to do. Nujood says that “Each time he [my husband] came to do his vile thing to me at night, I lay awake afterward” (50). Nujood was sexually and physically abused and she had to work up the courage to run away. Also, in the novel, a reporter says “‘But you’re so little! How could he do that?’” (61). This shows that even reporters and outsiders to the event were shocked that anyone could do such a thing. I would recommend this book to anyone above the age of twelve because some of the problems Nujood faces are quite serious and would be hard to understand at a young age. The novel “I Am Nujood” is such an empowering story and everyone should read about problems like these. It is quite interesting to read about problems that occur far away in the world, that we would never suspect to happen as Americans. This novel taught me that all it takes is a little courage and your dreams can come true. I hope other people enjoyed this book and Nujood’s story spreads around the world. The book I read was I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced by Nujood Ali. Reading this book made me appreciate my life and culture more because a young girl aged 9 is forced to get married! When I was 9, the only troubling thing I had to deal with was if my favorite Television show was on that night. Not setting up a wedding! This book discusses the difficult times of young Nujood and how badly she wants to get a divorce from a cruel husband. A young girl named Nujood who is 9 years old is forced to get married by her lousy father. In Yemen, girls typically get married off very young, however Nujoods age is the youngest. Her Husband was well over the age of 9, and promised Nujoods father that he will wait to touch her until she has hit puberty. Nujood felt more comfortable when he said this. Although she was very unhappy and uncomfortable, she had no saying on the marriage. Just the men signed the papers and never consulted with her about it. When a bride is married in that culture, she moves to the husbands’ house. When Nujood moved to her husband’s house, she was surprised when she was told that she could not play with the other little girls and boys. Nujood felt as though she has left her childhood behind. Her husband however did not keep his promise to Nujoods father. She was mistreated, abused, and pretty much everything repulsive. Nujood finally plucks up the courage to get a divorce. Judges and lawyers are flabbergasted when they hear the mistreatment her husband had thrust upon her. They feel as though Nujood is their responsibility and that they should do something about the situation. Now this is not a spoiler alert because it clearly says it right in the title, she does get a divorce. Nujood is the youngest child to get a divorce. She is also the first child bride to ever get a divorce in Yemen! My recommendation to this book is you should 100% read this book!! This book is really intriguing and If you really want to know what other cultures are like (without spending a boatload of money) than this is the perfect book for you. If you really like to read biographies, than this is the right book for you. It did not take me too long to read because it is so interesting. The part in this book that I find super intriguing is that women have to get married. It by no means is like our culture because I find the women here are more independent. The women in Yemen can’t be independent without being shamed upon by everyone else! The one thing I really dislike about this book is how easily it seemed that she got the divorce. I felt as though it went along smoothly. It surprised me that the judges and lawyers were very keen on getting her a divorce. At first, I thought they would say no and move on but they were very protective.
