Resurrection in Mudbug is the fourth book in Jana DeLeon's ghost-in-law series. For the most part, it is written much better than the previous three and it is less formulaic. While some of it is still predictable, the story has some good surprises.This book has a few points-of-view, which is nice; some of the previous protagonists get some decent page-time. And Helena is as hilarious as ever. Maybe more so. The addition of Jadyn St. James as game warden, ushers in a new cycle in the Ghost-in-Law series. Because Jadyn has jurisdiction over anything in the game preserve, and because she is a beautiful woman in the hidden world of the bayou, there is a lot of great conflict and contrast in this book. I love that Deleon does not shy away from the darkness that can be the bayou, a place where very few venture, and it adds a bit of a suspense/thriller feel to this cozy. The murder is especially grizzly, with small, but interesting, forensic details. Add the ghost of Helena Henry, and her inability to control her panic, and you end up with the perfect balance of humor and thriller. I can truly say that Helena is unique among the ghosts that I've read, both in her personality and skills. It definitely adds a layer to the mystery as Jadyn has to manage the murder as well as Helena's constant wardrobe and ectoplasmic malfunctions, all while trying to stay alive. As to the identity of the murderer, I was caught completely by surprise.
