Christmastime is the right time for some sappy, happy reads, and this fits the bill. While I'm sure that many "serious" readers will poo-poo this I enjoyed it for what it was, a bit of seasonal tinsel. The author never lets you forget that this tale is told in flashback. He goes a little overboard with his use of brands, music artists, current events, and icons of 1980. that being said, about half-way through this, I began to really warm up to the story, and I think the writing improved somewhat, too. Although it will never be mistaken for great literature, it is a nice light touch of holiday fluff! I really did like this Christmas novel. If I could I would give it a 3 1/2 star rating. The characters were realistic, likeable and interesting. It is a christian novel so there are several references to being saved, and that was fine with me. Most reviewers gave this a higher rating than I did, and although I thought the book was good, it just wasn't a page turner for me and it was a little predictable. The story has some romance, some family dynamics that everyone has....divorce, single parenting, strong parental figures, financial struggles, and illness, but the spirit of Christmas wins out in the end. I like a feel good book for Christmas and this delivered.
