A well-written,involving autobiography written by Gertrude(Trudi)Kanter(ne'Ehrilich/Ellis) a half-Jewish Milliner who managed to narrowly escape Nazi-Occupied Vienna & emigrate to England along w/her 2nd Husband,Businessman Walter Ehrlich(later Ellis). She was able to get her parents to safety as well (though sadly, her husband's side of the family was unable to get out & died in the camps.) I would like to know more about this brave,smart & resourceful woman but unfortunately other than fact that her husband died in 1960 & that she remarried and passed way in 1992 little more is known about her. I suppose it's because she never had children & everyone who knew her either was killed or passed away from natural causes. I've read so much about the victims of Hitler's Genocide that I'm always happy to read about anyone who managed to evade or survive it so I recommend this book for that especially. I am not sure if I liked this book or not. I know it is a true story, but I felt like I was reading a novel the whole time and never felt as if it was a memoir. I disliked Walter I found him shallow, useless, and an extreme burden to Trudy. The premise of the book is very good in that it shows how difficult it was for people to get out of occupied areas and also how not all Nazis were horrible people and did help those they good. Again I felt as I was reading a novel so can't recommend this book as a memoir as I never felt it is.

I wanted to like this book, but couldn't stand the writing. I didn't feel compelled to finish it.
