About book Pure Präsenzsehen Lernen Wie Die Mystiker (2010)
Great beginning into contemplative thinking. Deep. Rises above denominational lines. Rohr writes in short chapters. I love it when theological books have short chapters. This maybe trite, but theologians so often have chapters which go on and on and on, and it seems to me the chapters have to be long because theologians love to hear themselves pontificate. They feel everything they have to say is important, and it takes forever to make a point.Rohr on the other hand breaks ideas into small bits and makes his point. For some reason I really respect that.At the end of the book are many exercises to help one "contemplate.".....if one can understand them!A good book to own as a reference. I haven't read Richard Rohr in quite some time and can better understand why he can be off-putting to many. Unfortunately, I think his forceful, polemical tone is unnecessary. I think he could be more effective in communicating many of his very important insights with less vitriol toward the institutional and Traditional, especially since it is to these that his message is most pertinent. He goes too far, in my opinion, and moves away from the Judeo-Christian tradition in a few points, most significantly in his insistence that no anger should be shown toward the ideas of others. He says, "Moral outrage at the ideas of others hardly ever serves God's purposes, only our own." Certainly, there is an important truth to this statement. Yet, the prophets, for whom Rohr seems to otherwise have firm affection, flatly contradict this assertion. So does Jesus. Righteous indignation should be shown toward all injustice and "ideas" that give birth to it. Many ideas in today's world need to be forcefully repudiated. This is not arrogance per se, although it can be. Is the nondual mind Rohr purports disconnected with the affective self? With one's personality? This is where he gets too eastern, in my mind.
