About book Immortal Diamond: The Search For Our True Self (2013)
I read this by dipping into it from time to time over the year and I wish I had read it more quickly. I also did not realise it was a follow on from his well-know book, Falling Upward which I have not yet read; if I had realised this I would have read them in order. Sometime his writing is far too 'mystical' and esoteric for me, but at other times he is profoundly insightful. We have to go through death to get resurrection but often it is actually the resurrection - the finding and the accepting of our true self (the immortal diamond) that we can be afraid of. Helpful for the broken - and that's all of us! But will need to read again to get more out if it (after I have read Falling Upward!) In this work of vintage Rohr we hear some of the themes we are used to. Like 'Falling Upward', it is a book in the second half of life (as Jung understood it) from an ordained Franciscan man who has chewed over much experience as well as book learning. It focusses more on the inward part of the spiritual life than how we than engage with our Church and world. It does this by inviting us to mine for the immortal diamond that is our true self. One drawback is the audio reading. The pronunciation of some of the names of philosophers, Fathers of the Church and terminology is different from what we may have learned. This can be distracting. Those familiar with Rohr will find themselves at home. Those new to Rohr are in for a worthwhile journey of self reflection and self discovery through a Christian lens.
