About book Promessi Vampiri (2010)

This one would have been very enjoyable were it not for the main character's love interest, Lucius the Vampire Prince. He, while not a flat character, was highly unbelievable and hard to handle. My main complaint was his letters to his uncle. He had mentioned that his uncle beats him and possibly wants to steal or control the throne, but he tells him literally EVERYTHING that's happening to poor little Lucius in a foreign world where he's trying to force am American girl to marry him? If he was so concerned, he wouldn't tell him every little fact and would withhold some information. That would be smart. Other than that, the plot was predictable, Lucius wanting to destroy himself to not hurt Jessica (??) was confusing, and the evil cheerleader thing was cliché. I didn't love it, but I didn't dislike it either. A true-blue lover of vampire stories would dislike it because the book felt more contemporary than paranormal, but for a reader who is not very much into that genre, this was an okay book. The premise wasn't new, but I liked how it was presented. Lucius Vladescu may be a vampire, but his character is so relatable that he can be anyone to represent a star-crossed love affair. Jessica's character I can't point if I like or not. I like her strong will, but I cannot say if it was really love at first, or just a bruised ego that made her turn her attention to Lucius. Lucius, on the other hand is a character I liked. He looks highly at himself, yes... but what do you expect from a royalty anyway? Despite his arrogance, the few tabs I put on my book were his words - he has a lot of sense, and I understood where his thinking and actions came from. The ending was sweet, but it left me hanging. I came to realize what my friend Ela said, "YA books need not to be well rounded, it works on a formula that the main character has a mission - a journey to fulfill - and once it is done, the story is (sort of) complete, and the ending need not matter anymore." Unfortunately, I cannot help but wonder what would happen next. The biggest "problem" I have with this book would be the title. This is supposed to be "Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side," something that made me think this is a romance story - them coming from opposite ends trying to bridge the gap - but it wasn't like that. Clearly, where is the guide...and where is the dating on the dark side.Still, I quite enjoyed the story. They may be teenagers who act before they think thoroughly about it, but I was glad they were wise beyond their age.
