I wanted to like this book, and I tried. In spite of the significant spelling and grammar issues, I gave it more of a chance than I usually do (I reached 44% before I gave up.) But when the kids go down into the sewers "just for the heck of it," I had to force myself to keep going, hoping the goal would soon become more dynamic. Then when Willow has her accident and is hospitalized for weeks and weeks because she fell less than nine feet I couldn't go on. The plot felt too forced. Excellent and fresh ideas are the factors that kept this book alive for me. Basic synopsis: A virus has eliminated over half of the world's population. In order to stop it, the healthy have been sequestered into a dome for an estimated period of three years. During that time, the rest of the world will be heated to high temps in hopes of killing off the strain, so that when the domed population return to the outside world, they will be entering a virus free environment. The book focuses on life for Willow and a group of teens she makes friends with for their first several months in the dome.The writing was good, but something in the dialog felt strange to me. Willow, the main character, and her posse of friends were in the age 16 range but their interaction didn't feel like teen-talk. Their communications were more like the interaction that would take place between child and adult, roles intertwined. Very odd. These teens lacked that 'language of their own' thing - and - get this...they were actually respectful, kind, caring people. A little overly so? I can't explain but it just didn't seem realistic or genuine. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed most of the book and became invested enough to need to know the outcome of their stay in the dome and to explore the changes taking place over the teens. Most of the book I give 4 stars, but around 90% the book took a turn I was not a fan of. Others may find it thrilling and suspenseful, but unfortunately I found it cheesy and discomforting and too mad genius sci-fi-ish. I just didn't like it. Nor did I like the very last pages. Would I continue on to book 2? Not sure. Life will be quite different in the next book and I might like to find out what takes place in Willow's future. I got into the world the authors created and found some interest in the characters. So maybe. For me, Project ELE earned a 3.5.
