Book #! in a new series. Charles Gilman is the pseudonym of Jason Rekulak, the publisher at Quirk Books, the same people who brought us Ransom Riggs “Peculiar Children” books. So I guess he didn't have any trouble getting a book contract—for himself! Laughing. This book is definitely middle grade, not YA. And they are a fun riff on H.P. Lovecraft’s stories: horror lite, Publishers Weekly called them. This story is set in Dunwich, Massachusetts; there is a cephalopod-like creature with tentacles sucking kids through their lockers into who knows where; and the ultra-modern school has an attic in another dimension that is straight out of Lovecraft. Turns out the school was built of materials recycled from the mansion of mad scientist Crawford Tillinghast, the protagonist of Lovecraft’s 1920 story, “From Beyond.” The writing is fast and fun, if a little pedestrian, and the story moves well. I like that the “bully” becomes the hero’s friend after said hero saves him from the cephalopod. But the ending comes a bit too abruptly, and feels more like an artificial break to lure readers to the sequel. Muy buen libro, lo acabé en un día, excelente para adolescentes. La trama va de Robert en su nueva escuela en donde suceden cosas extrañas que pronto tendrán explicación a medida que él investiga junto con la ayuda de los compañeros menos esperados. Es un libro de fantasía y "horror" mínimo que se lee fácilmente y cuenta con 183 páginas, el final es abierto para la segunda entrega la cual empezaré a leer.
