The biblophile in me wants to love these books, but I just can't. I dislike that they are really for adults, and do not focus on what babies and toddlers would like to read. There is something to be said for making a book that will make parents excited to read to their children, but that is a non-issue with literature lovers. This particular one is a counting book, and there are so many other more engaging counting books. I am very much the intended audience for this book. I have always loved Jane Austen--I should love this book and want to buy copies for my future children. But I found myself annoyed by it. I know it's just a counting book, and I'm probably reading too much into it, but it really distilled Austen down into the most basic level: marriage and pretty dresses. And she is about so much more than that! I would hate to give a baby girl the idea that handsome bachelors and 10,000 pounds a years is what Austen is all about. So, yeah. If I have daughters (or sons) in the future, I won't be reading this to them!
