This is book 3 in a series, but the first I've read. The author did a great job of explaining past books w/o muddling up the individual plot, so I wasn't lost & I didn't feel like I was trying to be "caught up to speed" in 30 seconds or less. Very good thing!Gene sees himself as a villain, but lately - after being *gasp* forgiven for his past misdeeds - vengeance isn't holding the same appeal as it once was. He's currently feeling a bit of bear ennui. And then he spots Vicky, who is in his neck of the Arctic Circle on a research project-slash-adventure. They strike up an unlikely relationship - with him reluctantly providing protection for her. There's adventure, there are plots to kill him and plots to kill her and it's all very well done! But the thing that sealed this as one of my favorite shifter books was how Vicky reacts to learning Gene is a polar bear. Her reaction is EXACTLY how I have always imagined I would react to such a reveal, if the reveal happened after I knew the person. : ) So, this story gets 5++ stars & two thumbs up & has definitely inspired me to check out more of this author's stories involving shifters. : ) I really enjoyed this one and I liked that Gene was redeemed and is where he belongs now! I loved his heroine Vicky! She made me laugh with how she could faint so easy. Gene had me laughing with his attempts to deny he was falling for Vicky and his insistence that he wasn't a hero but a villain!I laughed so much reading this and of course their was great chemistry between Gene and Vicky, the person behind the attacks in the book was a bit of a twist though! Looking forward to the next book (and novella) in this series!
