One Gorilla by Anthony Browne is a basic counting book with pictures. The illustrations are beautifully drawn and the attention to detail with each of the primates is amazing. I would say this book would be a fantastic book to utilize in an art class where the students are paying close attention to details and color tones. My favorite thing to go and visit while at the zoo is with out a doubt the primates house and this author has done a wonderful job capturing different facial expressions that could be found on any primate. Read this with my 22 month old so many times in the last few days. She loves it and I do, too! She's already learned the names for most of the primates--and she can recognize the numerals as well. Initially I wasn't going to borrow this book from the library, because it was another counting book--and, well, at this point I'm already a little tired of counting books. But I just couldn't resist Browne's amazing mixed media illustrations. On each page were carefully rendered expressions on exquisitely drawn primates. I'd happily hang prints of some of these illustrations on my walls. I also enjoyed the final transition that explains to kids that humans are also part of the primate family. Recommended to anyone who wants to have something gorgeous to look at while counting with their toddler.
