I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I bought the Sweet Life Boxed set, and after reading the first book in the set, was a little wary of reading anymore. But, after reading the synopsis, I decided to give On a Night Like This a chance.Boy am I glad I did!I couldn't put this book down. It took me a week to read, but only because if I stopped and read it all the way through my kids would have starved and gone without clothes for three days. This story has intrigue. There are mysteries on both sides: Sara can't figure out why her father hates her so much - and when she does, it's something you don't see coming. Aiden can't remember what happened during a fire he was fighting with his best friend, who died because of something Aiden did (or didn't) do. And then there's the chemistry. Sara and Aiden are drawn to each other, old friends reunited after years apart. Sara's had a crush on Aiden for years, but after he rejected her once, she's gotten over and moved on. Or so she thinks. As they help each other find answers and deal with the discoveries they make, a really sweet romance evolves. I liked that the story didn't hinge solely on the romantic element, but mostly on the mysteries. The one thing I didn't like about the book was that there were a few bits of the story devoted to Aiden's sister, Emma, a fire investigator looking into some serial fires at schools in the area along with a missing nun. The author kind of teases you into thinking you're going to find out what's happening, but then you finish the book and you still don't know! I guess what I don't like is not knowing, and now I'll have to read book 2 in the series. Which, in the grand scheme of things, isn't all that bad. ;) 3 1/2 Stars. I was satisfied with this read. Without the mystery elements I would have just given it 3 stars... There wasn't really anything wrong with this book... No complains... But the love story wasn't mind-blowing... My favorite part about it was the school girl crush Sara had on Aiden... And it was mostly unrequited... We've all been there... As she got a little older Aiden got curious, and perhaps a little intrigued... But knew she was too innocent and in love with him to hurt her, so he does the right thing by her... Years later she's matured and turned into a sexy more confident version of herself... I liked that he didn't love her back in the day... It seemed more realistic that his feelings for her were shallow in the past... And not until years later did he see her in a different light. I enjoyed their back and forth... Especially when they talk about the past... I loved how he kept teasing her about her high school crush on him... And I liked that she was so honest about it... Those were my favorite parts.... The love scenes were good... again not mind-blowing... But good. Nothing super spectacular about the romance itself... But add the mystery element, and it made it a lot more enjoyable... I like this author... This is only the 2nd book I've read of hers, but I think her combination of mystery and romance really works and makes for an enjoyable read.
