I thought the first book in the trilogy was great, but this one is even better. The drama that unfolds around World War 2 is excruciating at times. There were times that I was so engrossed in the story that I thought about the characters throughout the day, sometimes sad and sometimes proud of my 2 dimensional comrades. Ken Follett weaves fiction and world history into an epic tale that the entire world should be required to read. Winter of the World is told through the eyes of five inter-related families, American, German, Russian, English, Welsh. The first generation of these characters were introduced in Follett's Fall of Giants, the first novel in the trilogy. These families are what moves this massive trilogy along. Their lives humanize what is happening in the world at the time. The characters have jobs that put them right in the middle of world events transpiring during the course of the years 1933 thru 1949. The most riveting portion of this book is the description of events in Germany during the time of Hitler's reign. It was a horrific time and the author does not hold back in his depiction of some of the worst events that took place there. This is also the most heart-breaking and suspenseful portion of the book. The book is full of heroes and heroines. We see brave acts in Hawaii, London, Russia and Germany. Characters that have lived fully on the pages are suddenly killed by one action or another. There are love affairs that are terminated, revelations about relationships, and depictions of personal failings.Since this book is a sequel to the events that took place in Fall of Giants a familiarity with that book is helpful to have a good understanding of this one. This book is truly colossal and I was absorbed completely by the story. I'm eagerly moving on to the final book in the trilogy, Edge of Eternity.
